The first week, your dog will probably wander off. That is the lesson.
Doga is not about getting your dog to hold a pose. It is about learning to be present with a being who has never once worried about yesterday or tomorrow. When your dog walks away from the mat, they are not failing the practice. They are demonstrating it.
The 8-Week Paw of Attraction journey is structured around the Tree of Doga — eight branches, each one a different quality your animal already embodies: stillness, breath, trust, play, surrender, presence, love, and joy. Each week, you practice one branch. Not by forcing it. By noticing where it already lives in your animal, and letting it teach you.
Week One: Stillness
Lie on your mat. Let your dog do whatever they want. Notice what arises in you when you cannot control the outcome. That is your practice for the week.
Week Two: Breath
Watch your dog breathe. Their whole body moves with each breath — ribs expanding, belly softening. Most humans breathe in the top third of their lungs. Your dog breathes all the way down. Follow them.
The Turning Point
Around week four, something shifts. Students describe it differently — a softening, a slowing down, a feeling of being met. The dog is no longer a distraction. The dog is the point.
Suzi Teitelman discovered this in New York City in 2001, practicing with her dog Coali in the weeks after September 11th. The city was in grief. The mat was the only place that made sense. And Coali — simply by being a dog — knew exactly what to do.
That is the original teaching. It has not changed in 25 years.
What You Carry Forward
By week eight, students do not just have a yoga practice. They have a different relationship with their animal. They have learned to receive guidance from a being who communicates entirely through presence. That is a skill that changes everything — how you move through the world, how you handle stress, how you love.
The animals are the teachers. We are the students. The mat is where we finally sit still long enough to learn.
