Why Your Dog Is Your Best Yoga Teacher

By Suzi Teitelman2 min read

Your dog has never read a yoga book. They have never attended a 200-hour training, studied Sanskrit, or memorized the Yoga Sutras. And yet, if you watch them for five minutes, you will see every principle yoga has ever tried to teach.

Presence. Breath. Surrender. Joy. The willingness to rest completely when rest is needed, and to play completely when play is called for. No performance. No self-consciousness. No gap between what they feel and what they express.

The Teaching No Human Can Give You

A human yoga teacher can tell you to be present. They can guide you through a sequence designed to quiet the mind. They can offer wisdom accumulated over decades of practice.

But a dog does not tell you to be present. A dog simply is present, so completely and so naturally that being near them pulls you into presence whether you intend it or not. This is not a technique. It is transmission.

Suzi Teitelman discovered this in 2001 when she began practicing yoga with her dog Coali in New York City. What she found was not a novelty. It was a revelation: animals are not companions to our spiritual practice. They are the teachers of it.

What Dogs Know That We Have Forgotten

Dogs do not carry yesterday into today. They do not rehearse tomorrow. They do not compare this moment to a better moment they remember or imagine. They live in the only moment that actually exists.

Yoga philosophy calls this state samadhi — the dissolution of the boundary between self and experience. Dogs live there by default. We practice for years trying to arrive where they already are.

The Paw of Attraction

The Paw of Attraction is the principle at the heart of Dogadog: what you put out, you draw back. Dogs are masters of this. They radiate love without condition, and love returns to them from everywhere. They radiate play, and play appears. They radiate trust, and the world — mostly — proves trustworthy.

When you practice Doga, you are not teaching your dog yoga. You are letting your dog teach you what yoga is actually for: to become, in your own human way, as fully alive as the animal beside you on the mat.

That is the practice. That is the teaching. And your dog has been offering it to you every single day.
